"High-Street Punk. Trash Couture. Psychedelic burlesque. It's glamorous. It's trashy. It's punk. It's fashion. It's anti-fashion. You give it a name. I wear it because I want to." The catchphrase for AnnaTommy.co.uk used to describe a clothing range for and by a group of people/ a movement/ a scene known as D.I.Y. An Internet spawned phenomenon where normal crafty people with a needle and thread can reach a worldwide clientele and sell their wares with love. The success of this is due to the genetic need of every teenager to put their collective stamp on the decade they are assigned. The desire to be a perfect individual but to fit neatly into the groove of their peers with regard to music, fashion and art. With special thanks to myspace, youtube, ebay and etsy allowing the creators to reach like minds on an international scale coercing us into the commercial. Making us "the generation of the little people". The story of one girl and her sewing machine: "I'm just an average girl from a seaside town." The self analysis of Melissa Dawkins (AnnaTommy). She started customising clothes at the age of 12 because she was bored, "There are only so many mix tapes you can make!" Melissa started by reclaiming and recycling fabric that existed around her house. "I would make skirts out of bed sheets, corsets from my grandads old jeans and dresses from curtains. Later on in my career I even made a skirt from a lamp shade cover!" Eventually buying an antique Singer hand sewing machine from a boot fair for £10 Melissa was able to create clothing of better quality and at a faster speed, sewing the seed for her professional capability.
