What is Annatommy?
High-Street Punk. Trash Couture. Psychedelic burlesque. It’s glamorous. It’s trashy. It’s punk. It’s fashion. It’s anti-fashion. You give it a name. I wear it because I want to.
You can walk into H&M and walk out making your parents proud, another clone in the armour of ordinary. Or you could wear an ‘Annatommy’ skirt that says ‘check me the fuck out’ - Annatommy’s all about confidence. It’s all about standing out.
How Did Annatommy Begin?
Annatommy started out with how I used to make clothes. I’ve made my own clothes since I was 12 years old. I used to cut-up things like Action Man t-shirts and make them into skirts or shred lingerie into something new. Gradually, people began to ask where did I get my clothes and if I could make them some. It grew from there and with a Prince’s Trust loan I developed it into a business.
How Has Annatommy Changed?
It did begin as ‘modified clothing’ – like taking a Thomas the Tank Engine pillow case and making it into a skirt. It’s not a conscious subversion of icons, that’s like being an art-student or a concept artist and having to have an explanation to justify your work. I just made it because I liked it. These days more of clothing comes from fabrics that I find that interest me, there’s still some ‘modifications’ like the ‘lamp shade’ skirt.
Where does the name Annatommy come from?
The name took a long time to get right. I wanted something that had an element of design and the attitude. Annatommy felt right with the link to anatomy and also that there could be an Anna Tommy. The logo itself mixes the idea of a heart and a corset.
